Humble Beginnings

As most quilters will tell you, I started my quilting journey out with no money, no knowledge, and a seam ripper. I began with the excitement of a newbie and tried to maintain my motivation despite many mistakes. I learned to read, search, and take my time.

This was my very first quilt that I completed with the help of my mom. Since I was still in school, I only worked on it at her house. It took me a total of about 2.5 months.

A log cabin is a great quilt for beginners! There are tons of patterns and variations, and it's an easy way to learn how to choose fabric. With 2.5" strips, the cutting process is simple, and gang sewing makes it come together in a flash.

I made this quilt as a Christmas gift for my boyfriend (now my hubby). I felt that a ring would come soon, so I wanted to make a queen-size quilt that reflected both of our styles. Turquoise is my favorite color, and he likes green. I chose soft, feminine calicos for me, and bold plaids for him.

Christmas morning came and he loved it! By Valentine's day we were engaged, and now we enjoy snuggling up under this precious memory during the winter months here in Boone, NC.

Now, a year later, I'm looking back over my accomplishments. They say that the first year of your marriage is the hardest (and boy, they weren't kidding), and I like to think the same of quilting. When you begin, you obsess over designs, constantly look on pinterest, spring for magazines every time you go to the pharmacy, and get overly excited when you discover a blog you like.

But once you realize that quilts truly are a labor of love, for both the recipient and the quilt, you learn to take your time and cherish each step of the way.

I am so thankful to have discovered this passion, and to have a wonderful husband by my side to help me choose fabric, update my blog, put items on Etsy, and be a constant encourager.

  4. Love it that your quilt has a wonderful story. So many quilts now pieced for the sake of creating. It's not very often that they come with a story. Thanks for sharing. ;)

  5. Beautiful quilt. I have made a few in the past and they are fun. I have a scrap type of one in the process but have put it aside to do other projects - I have too many ideas and projects I love to make and not enough time in the day!
